KALI WILDERNESS CAMP

CORACLE RIDE ON RIVER KALI

The River Kali dominates Dandeli, be it from its banks or from atop a mountain. Feel the tingling of adventure in your blood as you toss swiftly over the bubbling waters in a native, saucer-shaped coracle made of bamboo & tanned thick buffalo hide. Then is just the right time for bird watching. Weaverbirds meticulously working at their nests, pied kingfishers & egrets on the riverbank, cormorants gliding just above the river… Kali abounds with bird life. Watch your heart skip a beat as you hear a loud splash ahead of you. Only for a fraction of a second can you discern a crocodile and all that you finally get to see is only its tail.

Kali is a river of two faces! For those who really want to feel the fury of its cascading waters and experience the thrill of white water rafting, this is the place for it. Battle the swift currents in a rubber dinghy, and as you pull through the swirling waters with vigorous action of the oars, it will be a fascinating experience that will remain with you forever. Jungle Lodges and Resorts offers safe yet true adrenalin rush white water rafting on River Kali

Canoe tours: JLR can arrange for two nights and three days of Canoe tours on River Kali. With professional guides, you can go canoeing on the river and stop over at the banks in the evenings and nights where a camp will be pitched for you and dinner made over a camp fire.

Adventure activities: Other activities offered at Kali are Canyoning (rappelling down a waterfall), mountain biking, Kayaking, Rope courses etc

Guests will also be taken on jeep safaris into the Dandeli Wildlife sanctuary early in the mornings and during the late evenings.

Tribes of Dandeli Dandeli is one of the few places in Karnataka where you can find diverse tribal communities living in close proximity to each other, in the same forest area. One such is the interesting Siddi tribe. Over 400 years ago, this entirely Negroid race formed the slave trade between the Portugese and the Indian Princely states. The Portugese are gone, but descendants of these Negroid slaves ran away and escaped into the jungle and have managed to survive till today.
The Gowlis are yet another face of tribal Karnataka. Originally Marathi speaking nomadic grazers, they have now settled in the interiors of the Dandeli forests. Cattle are their sole wealth and they depend entirely on the jungle for their needs. You can also come across the colourful Lambani tribal women in Dandeli. Their origin is Rajasthan. They are like Gypsies, living their lives, as if there is no 'tomorrow'. Dance to a folksong with them, unravel their long forgotten culture, and tune in to a bygone era.

Also there are many important natural places to visit during your stay at Kali
Kavala Caves – Situated at a distance of 25 km from the base camp at Dandeli, these caves have a gigantic ‘Shivling’ formed inside. An awe-inspiring sight, one needs to crawl to get into the caves.
Syntheri Rock – Syntheri Rock is a 300-feet tall monolithic granite located deep inside the thick Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary. With the Kaneri River gushing ferociously by its side, the Syntheri Rock is a spectacular sight. A jeep ride for about an hour followed by a walk through the scenic jungle will bring you to this incredibly beautiful sculpture of nature. Sykes Point is one of the most beautiful viewing spots in Karnataka. From here one can get an unhindered view of the Kali River flowing through the gorges & the valleys below. For miles together, one can see nothing but undulating lush green forests all around.
From atop Siroli Peak - the highest point in the entire Uttara Kanara district, view the magnificent unbroken vista of the mighty rain forest. An ideal picnic spot, this place can be reached travelling by jeep to the summit – or by trekking.
Camping at Molangi – If the outdoors is what excites you, then Molangi is the place to be! A spot of indelible beauty, Molangi has God’s signature all over it. Situated at a point amidst dense bamboo thickets where the River Kali passes between steep slopes and rock formations, Molangi makes a perfect hideout for campers.
Yet another ideal location is the Nagajhari Valley, around which are densely forested mountains and streams running as far as the eye can see.

The adventure never ends at the Kali Adventure Camp. Come to Dandeli and see for yourself!

Other nearby places of tourist interest If you are planning a holiday for a week or so in that area, you can spend about 3 days at Dandeli, and two days at Devbagh. Besides, you can visit the places of historic and religious interest.

  • Jungle Lodges’ Devbagh Island Beach Resort, Karwar, 112 km (2 ½ hrs drive) from Dandeli
  • Hampi, the flourishing capital of the mighty Vijaynagara Empire, now in ruins
  • Exquisite temple carvings of the 15th century Chalukyan era at Aihole & Pattadakal
  • Temples carved out of a single rock at Badami
